In the recent years, France has become a nation in progress and it proved it by several laws. First, it recognized dogs as conscious beings and made it illegal for groceries to waste food on purpose. Moreover, Paris had the world’s first car-free day in order to lower the emissions and prevent the change of climate.
Now, France has passed a new law which will ban the sale of plastic cups, cutlery and plates unless they are compostable and are made of biologically-sourced materials. The Independent reports that the law will go into effect in 2020 and is part of the Energy Transition for Green Growth. The nation is eager to make a more effective contribution to tackling climate change, and this latest ban is part of its strategy.
Environmentalists are satisfied with these news, however, not all approve this ban. As a main argument was taken the fact that the rule of free movement of goods by European Union was violated.
Pack2Go Europe, a packaging manufacturer, informed the media that they will fight the law constantly. Eamonn Bates, a secretary general of the organization, told The associated Press that they urge the European Commission to act consciously and to do all legal action against France for infringing European law and if they do not, the organization will take the control.
French consumer watchdog’s reporter says that the rate of recycling in France is similar to the one in America, that is why many organizations approve the new law.
Bates is sure that there is no clear evidence the biologically-sourced materials are good for the environment. Moreover, he claims that it is possible for this ban to worsen the situation simply because people cannot understand the level of degradability. The consumers will understand the ban as an approval of them leaving the package in the countryside after already used knowing that it is easily biodegradable. This is not even true, since it is complicating the small problem making it big.
A better solution is to invest in reusable cutlery, cups and plates not just for us but for the environment as well. What will really help in preventing the climate change is decreasing the plastic pollution. So much plastic has been thrown behind that can even circle the Earth four times. Moreover, if people use plastic biodegrades reasonably, the one that will be disposed, the final result will be less damage to our environment.
